How Search Engines Work: Crawling, Indexing, and Ranking
Have you ever wondered how Google and Bing manage to find just the right information you're looking for when you type in a search term? Well, it all comes down to three key steps that search engines follow to make sure they're giving you the best results possible.
The Three Key Steps
Step 1: Crawling
This is when little automated spiders or crawlers go out and explore the internet, looking for new web pages to add to the search engine's database. They're like little internet detectives, following links and collecting information about each page they find.
Step 2: Indexing
All the pages that the crawlers find get stored in a giant database so that when you search for something, the search engine can quickly find the most relevant results to show you.
Step 3: Ranking
This is where the search engine decides which results are the most important and relevant to show you first. There are over 200 factors that go into deciding the ranking of a page, so it's a pretty complex process!
